I’m on the fence. As a dude who wants to protect his family in the outdoors, sure why not.

Then again, as a father, I’m not so sure. I can’t imagine getting caught in a crossfire because two drunk morons were going at it. Trust me, getting shot at is NO FUN when you can’t shoot back.

Yes, that issue. They didn’t mention yourhikes.com but listed a few others as sources to get trail info. They really missed a great opportunity there. Sorry for the late response, getting ready for the big trip again and it’s a bit hectic these days.

    Okay, here’s the review.

Rec’d it about a month ago now and here’s the scoop. If you’re a dayhiker, weekender in National Parks, I don’t think I’d invest in one of these. If you’re a someone that goes into the backcountry, a forest worker, park employee, fire services, or military, buy it and subscribe, or you just want it, it’s worth it.

I’ve used it to track our movements along normal tourists trails, boating trips, driving around town and I haven’t lost reception yet (but i have NOT been in the deep forests with it).

The SPOT’s going to get a workout in July in TN//NC as I continue my quest to summit hike in Tn and NC, do some climbing, and do a lot of trout fishing.
    More to follow.

Getting away is definitely good as are most choices. I voted for scenery. I try to be a summit hiker and the anticipation of what the view is and mostly ends up isn’t is a huge thrill for me.
No hills in Savannah though, just miles and miles of flat trails your grandmother would call wimpy. The fishing is fantastic however so I’ll enjoy it while I can. Hanginga t the campfire watching a redfish fry up is the tops.

Duct tape is almost a no brainer for something to take on a hike, wrapped around a hiking pole. It’s a bandage, a shoe repairer, sunglasses in the bright snow, etc etc. It just can’t be beat.

    Birdshooter,
Speaking only for myself I say it’s a good idea however, it wouldn’t affect me personally as I like to keep it out there for everyone to make fun of.

I take it back, received the Spot today. Stay tuned for a thorought review soon.

Initial impression: It’s cool but really not a lot ot be excited about. Comes with 2 lithium AA’s, user guide which is easy to understand. The unit itself is very ruggedized by appearance and has a bit of heft to it which makes me feel good about durability. Comes with a plastic belt clip on the back which I wish was some type of metal, just to make it even more durable.
Packaging is way overdone if you’re into green lifestyles. It’s all very cool to look at but like I said, way way overdone as I can’t figure out the purpose of it all as it’s not cushioning or anything.

Being very far from a fan of Sean “Iraqi Human Stooge” Penn I decided to break my promise and paid the $5 bucks for PPV and watched it. I’m glad I did because that was a very good movie in my opinion. The scenery just blew me away. While the kid made some mistakes I’d submit that most of us would make a few along the way as well. I can sympathise with his disgust of “things” and the institution and can relate to him on his wanting to live. As a single guy back in the day I spent a lot of time in the forest and lived in caves for almost entire Summers, living off the land and enjoying it. Wouldn’t do it now, but as a young guy, why not.

I sort of missed one of the biggests parts. Did he simply starve to death or was it something he ate that caused him to starve to death?

While his family had some severe issues (who’s doesn’t) they truly seemed repentent of their actions. I wonder how true that was to form?

I’ll be getting the DVD and for me to buy anything of Sean Penn’s that’s a testament of how much I liked the movie.

I personally do not like dogs. Sometimes they get on my nerves when they’re on the trail, but I understand that a lot of people love their dogs and consider them family members. Therefore, I say bring the dogs on! Just don’t cause me to step in any more doggie piles. I may just find out where you and your dog are camped at and leave you a pile of my own in front of your tent.
    Just kidding!

    No you’re not…hehehe
