My Best Hike: At Approach Trail
Best Hike Description: On 6/5/2013 after wanting to do the approach trail for the AT trail for more than ten years I finally got to do it a few days ago. It was a fairly hard hike but well worth it to see the view from the top of Springer Mountain and the water fall at Amicalola state park. It has basically just reaffirmed that the best things in life take hard work.
My Worst Hike: AT Approach Trail
Worst Hike Description: In 2003 I had planned to hike the AT approach trail when my husband decided to tag along at the last minute. He grabbed an old army ruck sack without a frame and packed a two burner camp stove, cast iron frying pan and kerosene lantern to backpack with me on the trail. We had our three children which were ages 8, 9 and 11 and a couple of rainbow travelers that we had picked and offered a ride to georgia on labor day weekend. We did not start hiking the trail until 1 pm and my husband who was out of shape kept having to stop every 100 feet because he just couldn't hack it. At about 6:30 we met a thru hiker that was on the last mile or so of the AT trail that had been hiking for about six months who just couldn't believe all the junk my husband had packed and he basically told us there was no way we would make it up the trail that night because we still had a long way to go and it had taken us five hours to get to almost the waterfall so he recommended we go back down and start early the next day if we still wanted to hike it the next day. So regretfully we did and we went into the national forest to camp for the night. that night it poured rain so we never did get to hike the trail the next day because my husband decided he did not want to.
A Memorable Trail Moment: This year when I went back to Amicalola falls this year and I realized that we had only made it about 3/4 of a mile the first time we tried to hike the approach trail in 2003, even though back then we had always believed we had made it at least two or three miles up the trail.
Dumbest Trail Move: allowing my husband to tag along and pack everything but the kitchen sink for a backpacking trip in an old army ruck sack with no frame.
Trails That I Want To Hike: John Muir, finish the entire AT trail, Rocky Mountain Trail
