Sounds really good. Thanks, of course you know my main goal is to rip off all these recipes and use them on the trail myself.

I realize this is late: I concur, those brands are very good. I wear Merrell Continum’s now and love them for the warm weather of Savannah, Ga.

For cooler, wet weather in Tn I have a pair of Cabella’s GoreTex hi top boots that have been going strong for 4 years now. Going to be replacing them soon and going with either Merrells or Vasque hi toppers.

Looking for some advice for cold weather (rated to -40 degress) boots good for crampons, snowshoes for use in Northern NY and White Mtns. Thanks

Firstly, I think the site is first rate and most likely the best site within the genre.
The point totals for “free stuff” is just fine. I would however, decrease the number of points earned for entering a hike while increasing the number of points for a trip report. This awards hikers that are getting out there and going bush whacking. This would make it harder to earn points for most hikers in the end. Pros and Cons both ways.

I’ve thought several times how nice it would be to look up hikes by zip codes or within a certain radius of a city and state. Each would work well.

Getting more post from members in the forums, that’s on the members. Maybe earn one to five points per post for participating in the forum discussions to improve participation. More is not necessarily better however.

How to articles would be great! I’d honestly like to see quarterly newsletters in email and archived form which focuses on a specific hike for different regions of the country, as well as gear reviews, and question and answer forums. Imagine if you will, a condensed version of Backpacker magazine.

In all honesty, I really like the site. I commend you on your continued work to improve it.

I’m sticking up for a fellow Canuk – aka Survivorman. He travels solo and films his own stuff. Can Bear say that? And he does a pretty damn good job for being an amateur camera man. Besides, you have to always wonder if one of those camera guys isn’t passing Bear a Snickers.

Right you are, I mean, it’s not like Bear’s been caught, misleading the viewers before..wait a sec. I was really disappointed by Les’ second season of Survivor man. The Labrador episode with the dog sled team was pretty boring. The Cooke Island’s episode was great however. The 2nd season just didn’t have enough shows to compete with Bear in series to series matchups. In the end, I like Les better, but he gets blown out of the water in a series to series match this go around. I’m hoping these guys have at least one more season in them.

BTW, Everest: Beyond the Limit rocked this season!!!

The Patagonia episode tonight was good. I’ve been dying to see either Bear or Les in this location. Next week, the Andes..oh yeah!

SF, I’m sold on this pack. LOVE IT and I’m sold on going lite on the trail. Easily held everything I’d take on a weeklong hike and my shoulders feel great, even my right should which has been dislocated a couple of times and has a grossly raised collarbone from a separation and subsequent screwed up surgery. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

How about Black Mtn, Ky’s highest point?

Here’s a link and be sure to download the waiver for hikers as it’s required to be on your person to hike this area. There are some other trails mentioned on the following site as well.

    Black Mountain- 4139 ft

Be sure to be prepared for the cold and have a good plan.

Hopefully your hike went well. That entire area is good. We are doing the JMT, Tn version during Thanksgiving. I’ve hiked this many times as a kid and didn’t even realize really what I was doing. I’m looking forward to a reunion with this trail and the river.

Got the email from GSMNP today. The road is closed to the Dome. Hiking is allowed during this time, but they do stress a good weather plan. Thanks for your help…can’t wait till Christmas Leave.

Just so I understand. The road is closed but hiking to the Dome is okay to do?

    Thanks very much SF.
