Grand Canyon National Park - Phantom Ranch - Member Hike

Hike Name: Grand Canyon National Park - Phantom Ranch
Country: United States
State: Arizona
Nearby Town: Tusayan
Rating: 4 stars
Directions: GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK (SOUTH RIM) - Grand Canyon Village (at the South Rim of the Canyon) is located 60 miles north of Interstate 40 at Williams, AZ via highway 64, and 80 miles northwest of Flagstaff, AZ via highway 180. Although it is only ten miles from rim to rim (as the crow flies), the North Rim is 215 miles (about 4 1/2 hours) from the South Rim by car. Fortunately this hike only requires access to the South Rim which is open year round.

Once you enter the Grand Canyon Village, follow the signs to the backcountry office which is located next to the Maswick Lodge. You can get your backcountry permit here, leave a vehicle overnight, and get a schedule for the free shuttle service to the South Kaibab Trailhead.

EASTERN TRAILHEAD (SOUTH KAIBAB TRAILHEAD) – The South Kaibab Trailhead is located about 1/4 of a mile south of Yaki Point. Motor vehicles are often not allowed here (especially during the busy months), so you may need to take the Kaibab Loop Shuttle Bus which runs every ½ hour from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.

WESTERN TRAILHEAD (BRIGHT ANGEL TRAILHEAD) – The Bright Angel Trailhead is located near the Kold Studio at the West Rim Shuttle Bus Interchange and is only a short walk from the Maswick Lodge and Backcountry Information Center.

At the South Rim, free shuttle service is available year round throughout Grand Canyon Village and out to the South Kaibab Trailhead. You must obtain a permit from the Backcountry Information Center to camp at any backcountry site including Bright Angel Campground, Phantom Ranch, and Indian Garden where we stayed during this trip. We recommend that you apply well in advance for a permit although a small number of permits are sometimes available the day of arrival. There is a fee of $10 per permit plus an additional fee of $5 per night per person.

Hike Summary: The Grand Canyon is a World Heritage Site and is one of the most spectacular examples of erosion anywhere in the world. The views from the rim of the canyon are nothing short of spectacular, and people come from all over the world to see them. Many backpackers make a round trip hike down into the Grand Canyon and stay at either the Bright Angel Campground or the Phantom Ranch (which are located a short distance from each other.) Along the way are amazing views, two suspension bridges that span the width of the Colorado, and typically a mule train or two that are used to transport food and supplies to the ranch.

The 24th of March I went down at 5:00 A.M. reached the buttom at 7: 20 A.M. I returned and got to the top at 10: 40 A.m.I went without gloves and almost got hyperthermia in one of my hands. It was so cold. I stopped going up like 5 times for eating and drinking water. It was an excellent experience. Since the beginning I joined a father and a son and they provided some special thing to be put on my shoes for going down on the snow. It was an unique experience of my life,if you have not done it, do it but be prepared physically and mentally.
