Trip Report: 12/12/02 (Thursday) – The Operator and I wanted an earlier start today than yesterday and were packed up and on the trail before 11am. It was about a 4.7 mile hiked out of the Canyon today, but the first few miles were reasonable. We hiked to the three mile rest area before taking a break, which turned out to be a short one. Decided to stop for lunch at the 1 ½ mile rest area, and had a nice lengthy break and talked in detail to some guy from Texas who was making his third trip to Phantom Ranch and back. The Operator pulled away from me in the last mile as we climbed to the South Rim on the Bright Angel Trail. The number of day hikers increased significantly in this area, and I noticed a crowd of them photographing something above the trail. It turned out to be a mountain goat (I believe) and was not bothered by the number of hikers that wanted to take its photograph. It had a companion that also posed nearby.

Finally made it to the South Rim around 3:30pm today, tracked down The Operator, and walked to the truck to get rid of the packs. I was definitely tired, and considered taking the bus until The Operator and I realized how close the truck was at the backcountry parking area.

We drove back to the Bright Angel Lodge and just slipped in before 4pm when the dinner menu kicked in (as did the prices). Had some food, some beers, then hit the gift shop to pick up a few Christmas gifts. We pulled out of Grand Canyon National Park right as the sunset and headed for Utah.
