I have the same percolator. I’m looking for a press mainly for when I’m in doing field exercises with the Army. The Joes in the mess tent make horrible coffee and I like Dunkin Donuts coffee and had some that a buddy made out of his lexan. The lexan press doesn’t hold up well so I’m looking for a good, sturdy press that can handle being roughed up.
I agree, you can’t go wrong with a good percolater.
Gear Review: Bakepacker.
Weight outstanding! Made some peach cobbler and although it turned out ugly as sin, the cobbler was DEEELISH! Will probably keep this one set aside for entralling the boy and his friends on local hikes as I’m never letting my stove, kettle, and black beans and rice get too far from me on overnighters.
After watching Survivorman drink pine needle tea over and over I decided to see if it’s as good as he thinks it is. Granted I haven’t been in the wilds for 5 days without a drink or food, it was good. Mixed in a packet of Splenda and voila. Not bad, wouldn’t trash the Black Tea for it but it was good. I suggest thoroughly washing it if you live in an area with a lot of pollution or mosquito sprayers.
Has anyone seen a good, light but sturdy, metal coffee press or do you like the plastic types just as well?
RB83,
Firstly, nice Jeep, should get you to just about anywhere. What type of hiking are you into? Amble through the woods, waterfalls, summit hiking?

I haven’t hiked MO but the Ozark Trail looks great!

Very sad ending, prayers for her family.
Been here in past years several times around Christmas. It seems weird because out of all the times I’ve been there I’ve never seen another person on the trails, not one. I really do pray she is okay.
Fox News has this:
Was driving around Maryville today and saw the store he works at, Little River Trading Company, and asked the people in there how he’s doing. Looks like he’s in Maryville and getting more treatment. According to the clerk, he shouldn’t lose anything if he takes care of himself properly.
I have to agree with him, the store was great and is on Hwy 321 going towards Townsend. A bit cramped but the selection, well, can only be beaten by Sun and Snow Sports in Nashville.
How’s about saying a few prayers for his recovery will ya?
Hiked with a dog today and I’m completely sold on it keeping the youngsters “into” the hike, however, stepped in a big pile along the trail and it wasn’t from the dog we were with. Clean it up, will ya?
The bridge at the Hiwassee River Power house is closed for renovation for the next month or two. It does not affect the BMT or JMT’s in Tn however it is a popular area.
Just past Wildcat Creek you’ll see an arrow pointing to the right, apparently instructing you to climb up a small hill with exposed roots, the trail actually begins a series of switchbacks up the side of McCulley Mount (I think that’s the name). If you continue up the creek and not go the switchback way, you’ll end up on the trail and I prefer this route as there are some good rock outcroppings and boulders if you’re into that sort of activity
For the clean up ease / weight/ and price it seems like a pretty good deal. We shall see.
Haven’t used it, I’ve been thinking about one of these as well. The 8-10 hours of direct sunlight requirement is the thing holding me back as I haven’t hiked in many places that meet this requirement.
Off original topic, Just FYI:
Interesting article of JMT “Ultralight Style” in Dec 07 issue of Backpacker Magazine.
Backpacker Magazine Dec 07 issue has good Ultralight Handbook section:
43 Tips & Gear to make switching easy Page 69
Also ultralight gear is tested and rated in the Feb 08 issue Page 85 (Tents, Daypacks, Apparel)
And…it’s really inexpensive and weighs 4 oz. Perfect, sold. Wish it would get here before our trip. It might make it there before our last trip.
Cobbler, cobbler, and more cobbler.

It sounds like it’s a fee area probably no more than a few bucks. Second link mentions a camping site along the trail at 1.4 miles in and also a camping area at the base of the falls 3.7 miles in. Based on my experience at Brasstown Bald, Ga last Christmas Eve, you won’t see a soul out there and you’ll have the entire forest to yourself.
