If he is going to be car camping, then weight is not an issue and I agree. Go with at least a three man.
I have the Copper Canyon 13×12 from Eureka and absolutely love it. They also have a 10×10, which would make a great family tent for Dad and three boys, while they’re small.
Thanks for the list Birdshooter,
I’ve done that end of the Foothills Trail a few times. We took a bunch of Boy Scouts from the Fishhatchery to Oconee SP last spring and we’ve camped along the Chattooga several times. I really like that area.
In September, I’m introducing a camping buddy to backpacking. We’re planning to start at Sloan Bridge and hike the Fork Mountain Trail to Ellicott Rock and along the Chattooga to Burrell’s Ford, just like you suggested.
I couldn’t get that link to work.
Here is another.

I generally don’t use them just for hiking, but there have been times I wished I’d had them. When backpacking, if I forgot ’em, I’d go back home to get ’em.
Birdshooter,
First of all, I love the site, but something I would like to see is GPS data for the trails people have hiked. If there was a way for us to share our tracks with each other, that would be a good thing. Here is a site that has something along those lines but the selection is pretty sparse.

I would also like to know what equipment other people use.
There is a wealth of knowledge and experience among these members. What they use would say a lot about a product.
I imagine information added to the profile for tent, sleeping bag, pad, water filter, stove, cookware, backpack, boots, etc. Maybe there is a way to show statistics on how the different brand/models rate, based on member usage.
And last, a place for backpacking recipes. They could be entered into a form so people would know what is expected.
I would want to have:
ingredients
what to do at home (dehydrate, repackage, precook, etc)
what to do in camp (add 2 cups boiling water, mix ingredients x, y, and z)
how many servings
calorie content if possible
where to find special ingredients
You have a great site, keep up the good work.
swampfox
You can find it on Amazon for $10.49
It has been on Animal Planet

I recently bought the Hennessy Expedition Asym for just under $100. I’m going to try it in the back yard this weekend and then take it to the Foothills Trail next weekend. We are going to boat in to Laurel Fork Falls and backpack the short distance up to the top of the falls. We’ll basecamp there and hike the trail in both directions.
I have used one of these for a couple of years.

It only weighs 12 oz. and is really comfortable. Sometimes, you just need to get off your feet.
It was really hard to pick just one but I went with the scenery, but eating in the outdoors has to be a close 2nd for me.
