Trip Report: Kim, Garrett, and I decided on a whim Friday afternoon to make an overnight trip to Landoll’s Mohican Castle, in part merely for something to do, but also in part to see the Christmas light display. The Christmas lights were not overly spectacular, but were nicely done nonetheless. Either way, we enjoyed spending time at the castle and exploring the grounds.

We originally had a hard time deciding between the Lawrence Suite, which is one of the several rooms located within the castle itself, and the Macbeth Cottage, which is one of two available standalone cottages. We ultimately decided on the Lawrence Suite and were pleased with the character of the room. The Celtic music they had playing when we walked in added to the ambiance.

Ate a nice dinner at The Copper Mug Bar & Grille, which is also on the grounds, and then stopped by the lobby to rent a couple movies. Watched one of the movies and then decided to call it a night. Got a great night’s sleep, but slept in so much, we didn’t have time to watch the other movie. Took our time getting ready and then stopped by The Copper Mug Bar & Grille again for the breakfast buffet. Dinner the night before was excellent and everyone was pleased with their meal, but the food on the breakfast buffet was so-so.

Snapped a few more pictures in the daylight since we had arrived after dark the night before, and then asked the attendant if we would be able to take a quick look at the Macbeth Cottage, and she obliged. After a quick tour of the Macbeth, we decided we were happy with our decision, but all agreed we wouldn’t have been disappointed with the Macbeth either, which coincidentally was built in the 1890s as part of the original grounds. Decided this would be our choice the next time if we were to bring our dog, Beans, since this is the only overnight accommodation on the grounds that is pet friendly.

Finally left the castle grounds and headed to Mohican State Park for the Lyons Falls hike. The hike itself was mostly uneventful, but very enjoyable. Loved the fact the Pleasant Hill Trail follows so closely to the bank of the Clear Fork Mohican River. And although I have been back to the area on a few occasions over the last 30 years, for some reason being in the area this time brought back memories of the several canoe trips we made here in the late 80s. Good times for sure, past and present, and I for sure, will return.
