Trip Report: 6/29/01: DYEA TO CANYON CITY (7.8 miles) – Slept til 9am this morning after a night on the town in Juneau which started at the bar in The Prospector Inn, moved to the Red Dog Saloon for dinner, and ended up at the Rendevous (for late night pool, brews, and karaoke with many locals and the Canadian navy).

Grabbed breakfast at the hotel restaurant this morning, then hit Juneau to scout out some trinkets. Caught a 2pm flight to Skagway ($140 roundtrip) which was much more convenient than the ferry which has yet to finalize it’s schedule. The flight was killer. Arrived by 3pm, and immediately set out to do the following:
1. Check-in to Skagway’s Westmark Inn, drop off luggage, confirm room for 7/3/01 (The Senator, Yukon Matt, BirdShooter)
2. Get trail permit, change itinerary (All)
3. Get Coleman fuel (Yukon Matt)
4. Get train tickets (The Senator, The Camel)
5. Get refund for ferry tickets (The Senator, The Camel)
6. Book Shuttle to Dyea (BirdShooter)

All of the above went faster than I expected. The Dyea shuttle picked us up around 4:30pm and we were on the trail by 5:20pm. Hiked 7.8 miles to Canyon City this evening with a short break at Finnegan’s Point. Made it to Canyon City by 9pm as the terrain was fairly easy. (Tough climb to start though). Still whipped by the time we reached the campsite. Our loads were extreme. I quit laughing at The Camel as soon as I saw 67 register on the scales at Skagway Air:

The Senator – 49 lbs, Yukon Matt – 50 lbs, The Camel – 68 lbs, BirdShooter – 67 lbs. (all without fuel)

At the campsite, cooked up dinner on a nearby picnic bench after we pitched camp. Drank our pints of brew, then checked out the Canyon City cabin. Hung around the stove to read Chilkoot Trail diaries from 1898, then crashed after midnight. About 20 people were here this evening, and many arrived after the sunset at 10:30pm. It was too dark to hike much later. Canyon City was not the preferred destination with our late start, but Pleasant Camp was full. Sunrise is due at 3:30am.
