Trip Report: Me and my daughter Kimberly started out at Amicalola falls state park on July 28,2014 at approximate 7 pm. Originally I wanted to stay at the Max Epson shelter at the beginning of the trail and start hiking first thing in the morning since it was so late and I was tired from driving 4 hours just to get to the park to even start hiking. However, after registering my daughter is so gun-ho that she just kept pestering me until we at least went as far as the waterfall and then once we climbed up the 600 stairs we decided to keep going for a bit longer. We followed the trail passed the lodge and up around the hillside until we finally came to a creek where we could refill our water bottles. The creek was next to the forest service road and once we crossed that we entered into the national forest which meant we could finally set up camp. We met a woman from Boston who showed us a nice camp spot and we all decided to camp together. Me and Kimi sat up our tent and the other woman sat up hers. We talked a bit ate our dinner and then crawled into bed for the night. The next morning we tore down our camp and packed up our bags but the other woman decided to stay at the campsite longer. We started up the hill when a few hundred yards we met a couple of brother from North Carolina that were still tearing down their camp. After a quick hello we proceeded to hike up Springer mountain however by the time we got to the black gap shelter we decided to stop for lunch. At the shelter we took pictures of a tree that had a smiley face on it and a dragon that someone drew on the inside of the shelter. After a short break we finally made it to the top of Springer mountain where the starter trail ends and the official Appalachian trail begins. We signed the register at the rock and took a few pictures which marked the end of this hike as a success.
