Trip Report: Mary cooked some breakfast this morning at Mountain Retreat, then we loaded the dog and kid into the car around 11am (after his morning nap). We considered hiking in the Gorges State Park area, but pulled a last minute audible and went to the Bad Creek Access Area owned by Duke Power near Whitewater Falls. The spur trail runs for 0.6 miles to meet with the Foothills Trail at the river. It was hot when we started the hike from an overgrown paved parking area and walked through a grassy meadow. As we entered the forest, the temperature dropped by 15 degrees and it was much more pleasant hiking. Three trout fisherman were at the river when we arrived about 20 minutes later. Two were eating lunch and one was working the stream to the north of the twin bridges that span the creek. We chatted with them briefly, watched the dog swim in a shallow pool under the bridge, then hiked to a nice campsite about 1 mile from the trailhead along the river. The kid was due for another nap at 1:00pm, so we turned around and headed back to the truck at the top of the hour. He fell asleep on the way out, but woke up for the ride home.
