Hike Summary: | Out and back again hike roughly 10 miles total distance. Day one - Start at the parking area at the Walhalla Fish Hatchery and follow the marked trail along the East Fork of the Chatooga 2.5 miles until the junction with the Chatootion River Trail. Trail drops elevation during this leg. Numerous small water falls and tributaries along this section of trail but no camping areas. Turn left over bridge towards the Burrells Ford 1.5 miles. Mostly steady grade with a large open camping area just over the bridge. Many riverside camping areas along the Chatooga. Stopped and camped at a primitive site along the chatooga ~1.2 miles along this section. Day two - Hiked north back up the same trail from the day before and crossed back over the East Fork of the Chatooga and proceeded North to Ellicot Rock. 1.8 miles from the bridge. numerous camping areas along the trail. Will cross Bad creek during this section. Ellicot Rock is just off the trail down the embankment at the waters edge. Marked with flagging in the trees. Camped a short distance from Ellicot Rock at a very nice primitive camping area. Day three - Back tracked to the bridge at the junction of the Chatooga River Trail and the East Fork Trail. Followed the East Fork Trail back to the parking area at the fish Hatchery. Steady up hill grade during the return trip on the East Fork. |
