Directions: From Phoenix, Arizona, take I-10 E to the AZ-51 N exit, and continue for approximately 5.5 miles on AZ-51 N. From AZ-51 N, take the Lincoln Drive exit and turn right onto East Glendale Avenue and continue onto East Lincoln Drive. Drive for approximately 4.5 miles and turn right onto North Tatum Boulevard. Continue another one tenth of a mile and turn left onto East McDonald Drive. At the traffic circle, take the second exit and head into the parking lot.

Hike Summary: Camelback Mountain can be accessed via two main trails, Echo Canyon and Cholla, both of which are rated extremely difficult and subject hikers to steep elevation gains, rugged terrain, and harsh elements associated with the Sonoran Desert. The summit is 2,704 feet above sea level and provides nice views of the valley below.

For this hike, we utilized the Echo Canyon Trail, which is steep and very rocky. As such, there are handrails along the way to help climbers reach the summit. The elevation change from the trailhead to the summit is 1,400 feet.

I ran out of water climbing Camelback on a hot April day once … and still remember it vividly. Great views from the top though. Glad you got to do it while you were in Phoenix Moondoggy.
