I own two wonderful dogs and adopted them from shelters. They have never been threatening to humans or other animals. I always allow them to run off the leash while hiking. They are in an enclosed area all throughout the week and need to stretch their legs on weekends. I think it is horrible that there are laws against letting your dog run free in a wild area. People can be so petty when they complain about animals running free. These nagging, complaining people are the reason we have stupid laws like leash laws. In my opinion, you are taking a risk of running into a wild animal every time you set foot in a wild area, how is a domestic dog going to cause you trouble in these types of situations???? Please try to put things into perspective people!! You aren’t on this earth for very long so take life as it comes to you, laugh a lot, don’t be a complainer, and have a good time!!

I heard about a loop hike around Dahlonega using the AT/Duncan Ridge/Benton MacKaye Trails in North Georgia. Is there a book that documents this route? Thanks, Carl.

    Bob’s Toast

    1. Find forked stick.
    2. Place bread on stick.
    3. Lightly toast over fire.

Sounds like the guy is a serial nut case and that they are going to pin him for at least two other incidents on the trail. There’s also a 27 year old guy that disappeared in FLA that they suspect he took out. What a wacko. Thank God he is off the trail systems and out of the national parks. Fry him.

Many of the hikes don’t have maps tied to them which are very helpful. Is there anything you can do about that? Joseph

I had a bakepacker for a while and frankly wasn’t that enthralled with it. It is a lot easier to clean up after cooking but I think food tastes better when cooked in a skillet.

I’m a fan of the bakepacker, myself. If you’ve never used one – you should check it out. Easy to cook, no mess, and easy to clean up. You can bake, broil, etc. I’ve even baked bisquits and brownies in mine. Pizza is a crap shoot, but most other baked goods come out excellent. If you haven’t tried one, have a look at this link:

My favorite, perfect for breakfast especially in the cold winter months:

    4 eggs
    1/3 C diced yellow cheese
    Salt/ pepper

Add all ingredients to plastic bag. Mix thoroughly. Place bag into BakePacker, spreading to cover grid. Fold down top of bag loosely. Cover pot and boil/bake 8 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand to set.

    Services 2-3.

Has anyone seen a release date for the DVD? It was never shown in my area and I’m also curious to see some behind the scenes interviews from Sean Penn, etc.

Nothing. Honestly, as much as I’ve hiked and camped overnight in the backcountry – I’ve never had an issue. Charlotte (where I live) is 10x more dangerous in my opinion. All I run into in the wilderness are tired or thirsty hikers.

I’m sticking up for a fellow Canuk – aka Survivorman. He travels solo and films his own stuff. Can Bear say that? And he does a pretty damn good job for being an amateur camera man. Besides, you have to always wonder if one of those camera guys isn’t passing Bear a Snickers.

Dogs don’t leave trash on the trail. They are 50x cleaner than humans. What’s the issue here?

Give it up for Bear. If were lost in the woods or I’d hit the street for Mardi Gras, it’d be with him.

truly a candidate for a the darwin award…the world is full of ’em…this is just a new twist on an old story: MAN . vs NATURE, a common literery theme…let penn the commie mislead and deceive…the FACT remains that this clown had NO BUSINESS in the wilderness of Alaska…and now he’s DEAD, why? because he was STUPID…

I pay city, state, federal, inheritance, short-long term capital gains tax, property tax (on my car, boat and house). Plus I pay hidden taxes when I buy smokes and gasoline. Enough already. Our efforts need to go into diverting some of these funds to the backcountry, not to giving “the man” another way to tax us. When city, state and federal governments start having lay-offs like corporate America to become more efficient, then I’ll THINK about ponying up for some more tax money. Until then, I have no interest in feeding the government tax machine.
