I saw this solar power charger in an REI catalog and am on the verge of pulling the trigger and getting one. Just curious if anyone has ever used one and if it’s worth a crap. I hike a lot with an IPOD shuffle and this seems like the perfect way to keep it juiced up over multi-day trips. Any feedback is appreciated. James (aka “Tree Sleeper”)

Haven’t used it, I’ve been thinking about one of these as well. The 8-10 hours of direct sunlight requirement is the thing holding me back as I haven’t hiked in many places that meet this requirement.

If they can power some multi-colored Christmas lights that I hope to fire up on New Years Eve, then I’ll have to make a trip to my local outfitter tomorrow and make a purchase. Hope to do some winter hiking to ring in the New Year, and enjoy some hot, alcohol laced beverages to take the bite out of old man winter.

The reviews seem mixed. Frankly, I thought the unit was kind of heavy when I picked it up in the store – although you have to be realistic about the weight of it. You can only make it so light. Also, it sounds like it’s useless without direct sunlight – an issue for hiking in the heavily dense Southeast in the summer. A great idea – but I’m not sure it’s ready for prime time.
