Does anyone carry one while on the trail?

    Here’s my kit:

    1 Pack, Smoke Canister 2
    1 Pack, Pen Flares, 5
    1 Magnesium Flint Stick
    1 Swedish Firesteel
1 Prescription Bottle full of waterproof matches w/ tinder
1 Small Vial of Shaved Magnesium (eye drop container)
    1 Multitool
1 Firefly Emergency Beacon w/ IR cover
    2 Very Loud Whistles
    1 Army Issue Compass
    1 Spyderco knife
    1 Small Mag Light
    1 Petzl Head Lamp
    1 Magellan GPS
    Batteries
    Emergency Ration Bars
1 Prescription Bottle with Fishing Line, Hooks, Sinkers.
    3 ft of duct tape
10 ft of toilet paper (for firestarting not wiping)
Container: Medium Waterproof Army First Aid Kit (removed some stuff and made room sealed all contents in a food saver bag inside and out

I wear the GPS on my pack strap along with one whistle, have a couple of trekking poles wrapped with the duct tape, and carry another Bench Made “Aviator” knife. I’m going to add an orange emergency panel but I’ve been making due with an orange reflective hunters/motorcycle vest when I’m in an area where hunters are draped over my pack.

This is my warm or mild weather kit. A bit heavier than I want but has what I think is important just in case. This kit, for me, is an overnight or multiple day item rather than used on a dayhike that I’m familiar with.

    That would help.

Everytime I read the contents of my survival pack I’m reminded of the movie Dr Strangelove and the air farce pilot reading off their survival kit contents. Great movie if you’ve never had the pleasure.

They way things are going in NC/GA/FL with Hilton, etc. – I might have to start packing heat.

Agree with your Duct Tape – TTF – it’s saved my ass more than once. And I can’t say that about too many other things in my pack other than my bag and tent.

Duct tape is almost a no brainer for something to take on a hike, wrapped around a hiking pole. It’s a bandage, a shoe repairer, sunglasses in the bright snow, etc etc. It just can’t be beat.

    TTF
