I am so new, the sales tags are still on my equipment. How on earth am I ever going to get 2-person tent, sleeping bag, pad, cookware, stove, etc into that backpack (North Face Venus, med)?? What straps to the outside? the tent (North Face Rock 22)? the sleeping pad (thermarest)? I am so ignorant!!
For now, I’m doing car camping and will work up to the backpacking as I get braver. I have a nice daypack from Jansport for my little ventures out into the trails. We are going to Oak Mountain in Birmingham,Al next weekend for a first time trial run. Wish me luck!
Next summer, I and 2 friends am planning a car camping trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. We will be flying into Jackson and will spend the first 2 days in the Tetons. I am thinking about just getting a big duffle bag to put my camping gear in..all except the tent poles which I think would be safer with me. I don’t want to subject my big backpacking bag to the mercies of the airlines !
Let’s see, MSR pocketrocket stove, Bugaboo cookset…am I getting good stuff? I got lucky and got the tent, sleeping pad, backpack and daypack on sale thru Campmor. I may not be doing big-time expedition hiking but I don’t want flimsy stuff that tears up the 2 night in camp…during a storm…in cold weather.
AS for references, I just love Colin Flectchers The Complete Walker IV covers a lot but I need help on the details.

I’m new to this site, but I have experience in backpacking and hiking. I live in Columbus GA and I welcome you and your friends to join me on a day hike or an overnight hike on the Pine Mountain Trail near Hamilton GA…. It’s an excellent trail. I’ve camped out a couple of times, hiked end to end, also if you’re into trail running or fast packing 3-4 mph, it’s a good place to train….

I highly recommend you subscribe to Backpacker Magazine, there’s a lot of useful information in it – especially if you are a beginner:

Also, have a look at this book which is printed in conjuction with the magazine. It helped me a lot when I started out a few years ago.

My advice – keep it light, keep it simple and everything else will take care of itself. Good luck to you. I’m hopelessly addicted to backpacking and expect you will be soon.

I agree with Lenny, let’s hear about your overnighter!!

You’re definitely starting out on the right track, seek advice and more advice especially from other hikers that have visited the places on your to do list.

You appear to be buying top notch equipment. I’d recommend getting the Backpack magazine gear guide and also recommend a subscription for the product reviews. They also print a bunch of articles on Yellowstone and the Tetons. Thermarest rule, don’t skimp on that imho.

Lastly, look over Leave No Trace Principles and please live by them.

    Good Bushwhacking!

I am also new to this site and inexperienced.

I have the pack and have researched for the right equipment. I am planning a trip in May but am unsure as to where to go. I live in mid-Missouri and am willing to go as far as 500 miles away. Any suggestions?

    RB83,
Firstly, nice Jeep, should get you to just about anywhere. What type of hiking are you into? Amble through the woods, waterfalls, summit hiking?

You might want to start here Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites

I haven’t hiked MO but the Ozark Trail looks great!

    Gear Checklist from Backpacker Magazine.
