Tips, tricks, etc on how to backpack light:

    http://www.backpacking.net/

If you engage in backpacking, at some point, you may consider packing a lighter load. That consideration was the main reason that Backpacking Lightweight was created in 1996, and it continues to be its primary focus. Since then, however, the Lightweight Backpacking & Hiking website has grown to include a vast repository of resources useful for year-round backcountry safety & enjoyment. While it is true that Backpacking Lightweight promotes ultralight backpacking & hiking, featuring lightweight backpacking equipment, it is a also a proven resource – for all backcountry travelers – for researching and purchasing quality outdoor gear!! We welcome you, and we hope you will enjoy traversing the Lightweight Backpacking & Hiking website.

Well my man, I spent two days slugging a 70lb pack seven miles in California and let me tell you I don’t intend to do it again. There is something to be said for going light. Ultralight – we’ll I guess that depends on what exactly is in your pack. But going light – I’m sold on that.

As an aging baby boomer that has enjoyed backpacking since the 70’s, the tenants of backpacking light have literally saved my backpacking ability. There are so many light weight products these days, that I expect to be hiking until (and possibly after) I am sitting in a nursing home.

If you haven’t tried some of the products from GoLite they are worth a look. I have a GoLite pack and one of their sleeping bags. It cut my base weight down significantly although I haven’t been able to pull the trigger on any of their tents. They look too hot, too uncomfortable, etc. for me. Regardless, I recommend their gear for those who wish to travel light: http://www.golite.com

Checked out the podcast in preparation for a three week hike on the Long Trail this summer – and agree that there is some useful information in it.

Just got a rip off pair of crocks at Kroger. They are by far the lightest camp shoe I could ever carry. I am quite curious to see if they don’t fall apart after a weekend in the backcountry.
