Yeah, as your introduction indicated, I have stumbled onto your site. I’ve been traveling to Western N.C. on long weekends and the only problem is I’m not familiar with the area enough to know where the good spots are. I want to get a 3-4 day trip together for me and some pals this spring that takes us through Pisgah National close to Brevard. Nothing too difficult, but it would be nice to get out where it’s wild and you won’t bump into any other hikers every hour. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you like Pisgah and particularly the Brevard area, the Shining Rock Wilderness is outstanding. Particularly this hike:

The only issue is that the area gets a lot of activity (ie. hikers, backpackers) especially on the weekends. If you are a student and can go during the week, then that is your best bet. If you want to get away from the crowds and do a multi-day trip, shoot for Cold Mountain. It’s a tough hike, but worth the effort.

Let me know how it goes.

You could also do From the Mountains to the Sea Trail or sections of it. I’ve been reading quite a bit about this hike. This past week I’ve been all over SE and East Tn, and North Ga, and I’ve seen two other hikers other than folks in my own group. This is my favorite time of the year to get out into the woods, the bugs are gone, there’s not a lot of trail traffic, the vegetation is light as a lot of trail maitenance is being completed now, and there is plenty of fresh water to filter. The Rangers also have a lot less trouble on their hands and spend extra time explaining trails or good spots to go check out.
