Trip Report: Ah, Zion before it was discovered by the hordes of Chinese and European tourists! John, Madeline, and I rolled into Zion about 8AM and found ourselves in a quiet, peaceful, and nearly deserted scenic wonderland. We drove the length of Zion Canyon and the only place we saw a significant number of cars was at Zion Lodge. At the trailhead in the Temple of Sinawava, we were the only car parked, in spite of the fact that it was Memorial Day weekend. We shouldered our food bag and strolled up the trail.

The Virgin river was running high, creating quite a bit of noise, too, as it swept through the narrow places in the canyon. We hiked to the end of the trail without seeing another person. At the Narrows, we laid our lunch out on a rock in the shade at the river's edge. Following lunch, I sacked out on the rock for a little over 3 hours -- I had driven all night long from Los Angeles while John and Madeline slept. While I was sleeping, John and Madeline cooled off in the river.

When I awoke, we gathered our things and walked back down the trail. I could see that Zion was worth some in-depth exploration, but our main destination on this trip was the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
