Trip Report: | Deb and I parked at Summit Trailhead and hiked out onto the Great Western Trail on a bright, sunny autumn morning. The best of the fall colors were past, but the aspens still gave a good show. After hiking a little over 2 miles, the sky clouded over, and for a bit it looked like rain was on the way. It passed, however, and by time we got to the Mud Springs trail junction we were once again in sun. At the Mud Springs trail junction we encountered a bull moose, who eyed us warily, but moved off slowly. The fall colors were lovely from the top of the ridge looking east. We descended with ease into Cascade Springs but Deb got tired by time we reached the bottom of the trail, and it was tough going for her up to Summit. The last 1.5 miles I had to literally drag her up the trail. She was really sore the next day. |
