Trip Report: | I parked at Pine Hollow this morning and hit the trail before sunrise. The hike up Pine Hollow was the slowest part, as usual, considering that it is a 1400’ climb over its 2-mile length. The sun broke out on me when I emerged onto the Great Western Trail at the upper Pine Hollow meadow. There I met 2 women who were a little uncertain of the trail they should take. I advised them to go my way as it was a bit easier than doing the trail in the other direction. So for the whole way we leapfrogged. The ascent up the ridge from the meadow was good for a sweat in the open sunlight. I beat the ladies to the trail junction at the top of the ridge and waited for them. Sure enough, they were about to stride right past the turn onto South Deer Creek Trail and continue up the ridge – and that is a long way to go, as the Great Western Trail goes all the way to Montana. We stayed together for most of the descent into Cascade Springs, then on the long uphill to Summit they fell behind again. I waited for them at Summit again to make sure they got on the right trail from there. From there we stayed together down to Pine Hollow and the trailhead. |
