Trip Report: Jerry and I were originally supposed to take the Amtrak from Toledo, Ohio to Austin, Texas, which would have been a two-day trip over the weekend. From there, our buddy Adam would have picked us up at the train station, and we would have spent one night at his house in Dripping Springs before making the long drive to West Texas to embark upon a few days of hiking and backpacking. However, due to some unexpected weekend family commitments, Jerry and I both had to cancel our Amtrak plans and thus decided to fly into San Antonio Monday morning.

Adam picked us up mid-morning in San Antonio and we made the long drive to the Chisos Mountains Lodge area where we met up with Steve who had flew into El Paso a few days earlier to spend some time with family. We checked into our room at the Casa Grande Lodge, which turned out to be a decent room with an OK balcony off the back. We had a few drinks on the balcony, and then headed over to the Chisos Mountains Lodge for a quick bite to eat.

After dinner, we turned in early considering we had already had a long day and would need to be back up early the next morning for the long day of hiking ahead. Our original plan had been to either hike to Emory Peak or out to the South Rim, but not both. However, since Emory Peak was shrouded in fog for the entirety of our summit, we decided to push on to also catch a glimpse of the South Rim. The hike was long and strenuous for one day’s worth of hiking, but in the end, it was well worth it. I just wish the last 25 feet of scrambling up the exposed rock face of Emory Peak would have rewarded us with some better views. Oh well, I guess I have a reason to return now.
