Trip Report: | This is a long hike that I spent a whole day on. I was eager to get into the deeper parts of Congaree so I hiked quickly down the low boardwalk and then to the junction of the Oakridge Trail and the River Trail. From there, I slowed down and spent several hours on the 5-mile loop that runs up against the Congaree River. Early March is a good time to do this loop because you can see the Congaree River better than you could during full green times. There is much more under-story growth here due to heavy logging in the past. You'll also be a few steps ahead of the mosquitoes. After the River Trail loop, and back at the junction of Oakridge and River trails, I continued back to Cedar Creek and followed the Weston Lake Loop Trail back to Weston Lake. From there I walked the low boardwalk to the Sims Trail and headed back to the visitors center that way. Total distance was 11.5 miles. This hike was a demonstration of using trail combinations that I'm always telling people about. This was a good one! |
