Trip Report: My buddy and I were dropped off by Adam of Happy Trails Taxi service. He picked us up at Oconee State Park and dropped us off on Sasafras Mountain. A quick piece of advice to all hikers preparing for the foothills. DO NOT use the guide book with the green cover. We unfortunately didn't find out till after the hike that there is a newer version of the guide book wiht a yellow cover. Thats the one you want.

For the most part the trail was well blazed. There were a couple spots where the trail had some forks, and it took a while to find a blaze, letting you know you went the right way. The conditions of the trail were less than perfect. There was one sport where an entire mountainside of trees had slid down over the trail. We passed some day hikers that had to turn around. We didn't have that choice, and it took us about a half hour to pass through that 200 yard section. We passed a few spots were large trees had fallen, but those weren't too tough to pass, although we couldn't understand why the foothills trail conference had elected to clear some of the trees, but not all of them.

The Duke Energy Corps. has done a great job maintaining trails and adding suspension bridges and steps. It is easily noticeable when you leave the section of the Foothills Trail that they maintain.

There are too many areas to describe on this trail. The scenery was awesome. I would recommen not hiking it in the summer. We found ourselves on top of many ridges wondering what the vista would be like in winter when the foliage wouldn't block the view.
