Trip Report: | I’ve completed all the trails listed in the description, as day hikes. Six separate hikes were done to make it happen. Boardwalks were combined as a loop day hike. Although I liked the remoteness of the Kingsnake and River Trails, my favorite trail was the Weston Lake Loop Trail. I liked the way it stayed close to Cedar Creek, and I saw more wildlife on this trail than any other. Swinging around the large cypress-tupelo slough below Weston Lake was nice too. Many big trees there. A quick visit to Weston Lake was enjoyed before heading back to the visitors center on the elevated boardwalk. I heartily recommend ALL trails at Congaree National Park but I recommend the Weston Lake Loop Trail as a priority. If you are walking with your dogs, a dog trail from the visitors center is available. The dog trail departs the elevated boardwalk and continues to Sims Trail, which will lead you to the Weston Lake Loop trail, Oakridge Trail, and the River Trail. Any walk with dogs must return to Sims Trail to exit the interior of the park. Dogs are not allowed on either boardwalk, beyond the departure stairs on the elevated boardwalk near the visitors center. Be sure to ask the rangers about the Friends of Congaree Swamp. This is a non-profit organization that helps protect and promote Congaree National Park and it's unique environment. More info here: http://www.friendsofcongaree.org |
