Trip Report: 1/15/00: CC and I left Atlanta by 10:20am and made a stop around Gainesville for a few last minute groceries and to grab a sandwich from McDonalds. We made it to the Burrell’s Ford Campground by 1:10pm to find Sikle and Smoky waiting in the parking lot and hit the trail within 20 minutes for a hike to Spoon Auger Falls to snap some photos. Icicles were hanging from the rock, so it has been very cold here the last few nights.

We had nice weather for hiking, and there are a number of decent campsites along the Chattooga River. But we settled for one at the confluence of Bad Creek and the Chattooga only about a mile from Ellicott Rock, and we camped on a point with a nice flat area for fishing on the river. I managed to lose my lure and most of my line within the first ten minutes of trout fishing, and the river is much better suited for fly-fishing than spin casting.

In the late afternoon, we hiked about one mile passed our campsite to Ellicott Rock at the NC/SC line and snapped some more photos. The rock was pretty obscure and we almost missed it. We made it back to the campsite to get some wood, do some fishing, then fire up dinner before dark. The temps were into the low 30’s tonight – 35 degrees at 10:30pm - but the fire hooked us up. I never needed the North Face coat tonight and we were up until about 11:30pm.

1/16/00: We all got up around 10am this morning. Light rain started about two hours earlier, but was intermittent and stopped long enough for us to make breakfast and hike out. It was cold this morning, but we still saw a number of people on the trail and hiked back to the car by 12:30pm. Then we hit the road for Atlanta and made a brief stop at Subway for some lunch. Made it back to town in about 2 ½ hours.
