Trip Report: |
Began hike around noon and hiked alone. Trailhead was difficult to find. Ended up hiking down forest service road and found trail at Brick House Campground. Trail was heavily eroded and muddy from horses. The area has recently been thinned in the past year. Various operations have been performed from first thinning to seed tree harvests. The trail was well marked in places but recent logging activity has made it difficult to find markings. I had to follow recent logging roads for many parts of the trail. The scenery consists of large old growth pine and natural regeneration pines. The area was obviously established to protect soil heavily eroded by intensive agricultural/ cotton farming. Has areas of old growth hardwood and has several creek crossings. I passed several old homeplaces identified by open areas mixed with black walnut, wild rose, hackberry, honey locust, etc. |
