Trip Report: | I did this hike from Rock Harbor in early June of 1994 and it was a thrilling experience (I can’t remember the exact date). I took the float plane in to Rock Harbor, which was exciting, then stayed the night at Rock Harbor Campground. After my night at the campground, I headed down the trail and spent 5 days on the Greenstone Ridge. I took my time and did a lot of exploring. I had every kind of weather except snow but the week was comfortable. Moose sightings became more numerous the further away I got from Rock Harbor, but I never did see a wolf. Water was plentiful as were the mosquitoes and black flies. I was glad I had some insect repellant. Upon arrival at Windigo, I stayed the night at Washington Creek Campground and caught the Voyager II back to Rock Harbor the next day. I stayed at the Rock Harbor Campground that evening and then took the Ranger III out to Houghton, MI on the last day of the trip. This was my first of two trips to Isle Royale and it was the easiest of both. I would still rate the trail difficulty as moderate though. Some trail erosion can make footing something that needs to be paid attention to. |
