Trip Report: |
10/01/04 (Friday): It was sunny with perfect fall weather today and temps to the low 70’s. The Pixie and I slept in until about 9:30am this morning, then walked down for the complementary breakfast in the Biddford Hampton Inn. After a filling meal, we headed back upstairs to pack and watch the end of a movie on HBO then hit the road around 11am. It was a long drive to Baxter State Park, but we stopped in Millinocket to break the drive up a bit and bought groceries and some camping supplies at the local IGA. We made it to the southern gate of the park around 3pm and drove to the Katahdin Stream Campground to snap some photos and hike just over two miles to the Katahdin Stream Falls along the A.T. I camped here in ’94 the night before I climbed Katahdin to finish the last few miles of my thru-hike and it was great to be back. The leaves were at (or very close to peak) and it was a beautiful day to be on the trail and in the park. After sunset, we drove north on the park road for about thirty minutes to the Nesowadnehunk campground. A cow moose and her nearly full grown daughter were sitting in a small field right by the road. We took some pictures but they didn’t come out very well since night was coming quickly. By the time we rolled into Nesowadnehunk campground, it was dark and the ranger met us at the entrance to check our permit. We stayed at site #16 and had a beer before setting up camp. It cooled off quickly after sunset, and the fire was a welcome addition to the evening. Pixie and I set-up our Thermarests and cooked dinner right next to the fire. A few other groups rolled in before 10pm when the park closes the entrance gate for the night. |
