Trip Report: | Spent the night at the Hana Kai Maui. Got up early and headed to Koki Beach for some morning surfing lessons with Keli Everett, which was a great experience by the way. Keli was a great instructor, and Koki beach was beautiful in its own right. After the surfing lessons, we drove over to the trailhead, and hiked the short trail to the red sand beach. While we were there, we saw one nude bather and what appeared to be a homeless man. The homeless looking man made me nervous as he deliberately made his way towards our valuables, which were stowed with our towels on the beach while we were swimming. Before he was able to reach our towels, I worked my way out of the water and gathered up our stuff. Looking defeated, he plopped down right next to where our towels had been resting, despite the fact the remainder of the beach was completely open. Despite all of this, the hike is well worth it for the unique photographic brilliance of this area. Just be diligent about your surroundings. On the one hand, you want to turn your head and look away so you don’t have to see certain things, but on the other hand, you want to make sure you keep your eyes on your valuables. |
