Trip Report: Saturday (10/05/13) – I was up by 7:30am to throw on the hiking clothes and hit the road for Red Top Mountain State Park near Cartersville. We planned a Scout hike this morning so the kids could work on their Hiking belt loop, but the turn-out was dismal since many of the kids (including mine) have conflicts with sports today. Brent and I were the only two adults, and he brought his son and son’s friend.

I had packed and planned to review the “10 Essentials” as part of the belt loop requirement and we spent about 15 minutes going through the gear. We met at the visitor’s center and used a nearby picnic table for the lesson, but the crowds were rolling in as early as 8:30am and never stopped this morning. By the time we headed for the Lodge (and Whitetail Trail), there was hardly a parking space left.

Arrived at the Whitetail trailhead by 9:45am and hiked the short 0.5 miles to a point at Lake Allatoona. Both the kids and dog enjoyed the walk and unlike the Homestead Loop which was mobbed with people at the trailhead – we only saw one other hiker this morning.

Hung out at the lake for about 15 minutes then headed back to the Lodge. Brent and the boys were still full of energy and followed the red blazes over to the Homestead Loop. I gave the dog some water and hit the road for Atlanta.

All said - this was a great hike and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting or staying at the park.
