Trip Report: | Great hike, but I wouldn't take small children as I did due to the risks involved with the number of alligators in the area. The trail is a dirt/grass road used by range control and it very wide and has a good embankement. At around the 2 mile mark you begin to see a lot of swamp on the right side of the road and several slides used by the alligators. The wooded area of the hike is great with some great trees to climb and plenty of game trails to lead the way. Caution should be taken as there are a lot of hunters in the area so make a lot of noise. Getting onto post and getting approval might be a hassle for the non-military folks and if you aren't up to it, I'd suggest going to the Savannah Wildlife Refuge instead, fewer regulations and fewer hunters. All in all, a great trip for me now that I'm getting back into hiking after a few years. Relearned a few lessons on what not to do which is always good. |
