Trip Report: | After tailgating and watching half of the Tech/WFU game in Atlanta, we were on the road by 4:15pm this evening and stopped in Walhalla at McDonalds for an early dinner. The sun set at 5:30pm tonight and by the time the Weasel and I left Walhalla it was pitch black. USFS 708 was hard to find in the dark - especially with the road sign missing/stolen, but the atlas and trail map helped us find our way to the Burrell's Ford parking area. After a few wrong turns, we finally hit the trail around 8pm and hiked two miles over the course of an hour in surprisingly warm weather. At Bad Creek we ran into a large group of Boy Scouts and temporarily lost the trail. The scoutmaster showed us the bridge, however, and we soon raised our group on the walkie-talkie and met up with The Operator, Wild Turkey, Country Club, The Camel, Sikle and Juan about 20 minutes later. They got an early start today and had been at the campsite since 3pm. The Helmet and Doughgirl were also due in this evening, but must have had the same trouble that we did on USFS 708. They never did show up tonight and probably camped somewhere closer to the trailhead. The Weasel and I pitched our tents, cooked up a late meal, then sat around the fire until 1:10am with The Camel. The rest of the group sacked out about 11pm. A hunting dog walked into the camp latenight but ran off when Rebel went after him. |
