Trip Report: | Hit the trailHead at Cobb estate (8:00) The Sam Merrill Trail was under the cloud level. Views were good until Echo Mountain. (9:10) Looked around Echo Mountain site 15 minutes. Left site for Railway bed (9:25) Cape of good hope (9:40) Took my time to read all of the historical markers along the way. Traffic not too heavy because the fog was thick at this level. Mt. Lowe trail Camp (11:15) Moved ahead because people were shooting (yes, shooting) at the edge of the trail camp. Lunch on part of upper Sam Merril Trail (11:20) Took Summit WEST trail(11:35) VERY Foggy, some trail washout due to heavy rains early in season. Summit(12:30) No View from summit due to fog, twisted Knee on ascent. Rested knee 20minutes getting stiff so I started down. Took east trail back(12:50) Hit fire road hiked to Inspiration point(1:10) No view here spent 10 minutes hit castle canyon trail(1:20) Castle Canyon was wet, slippery, and had some washouts. Knee is not good at this point. Pressed on. Reached Echo Mountain 2Mi. (2:20) Knee better on wider better graded trail. Took Sam Merril down 2.5mi moved quick to keep knee limber Hit the Gate(3:20) Total Milage with Summit=14.5 Knee healed up good, nothing serious, didn't need an airlift. |
