Trip Report: | This final day would have been uneventful had it not been for my near disastrous spill on the way back down to Onion Valley Campground from Kearsarge Pass. Falling victim to the mesmerizing effects of placing one foot in front of the other repeatedly for several days, I fell into somewhat of a daze and ended up inadvertently catching the toe of my shoe on a rock in the middle of the trail. It started out as a simple stumble, one I likely thought I could recover from. However, the weight of my pack caused me to lurch forward, and I ended up lunging forward uncontrollably step after step unable to bring my balance back into a state of equilibrium. Ultimately, I went down, turning my head at the last second to avoid bashing it on a large rock. Somehow I managed to only suffer a couple minor scratches. Nothing hurt but my pride. We ultimately made it back to the trailhead without further incident, and ended up being enlisted to provide another couple with a ride back down to Independence. During our casual conversations, the couple asked what each of us did for a living. Someone cracked a joke about how The Colonel doesn’t really do much other than spend his time bullshitting students in his position as a teacher. We all shared a good laugh when the couple proceeded to inform us they were both teachers too. Priceless.
