Trip Report: | I took my wife for her first hike here. Snowfall hadn't occured in two to three weeks, and weather had been warm including several days of Santa Ana conditions. This trail is well travelled so snow was not anticipated on the trail itself. It is also a well maintained easily graded trail. The first two miles we encountered about five 6-foot long Ice patches. Thgese were easily traversed as there were indentations from footprints with gravel spread atop them. They were however solid ice. We crested the ridge hd lunch and proceeded to walk about 1/4 mile before we reached a solid ice patch that narrowed our path to about 4 inches. My wife began to slip and ended up hangng from a sapling until I could pull her to here feet and give her her walking stick. We decided to return because it was unsafe without crampons. It was a good first hike for my wife but, I misjudged the trail a bit, and she got a little scare. Fortunately it did not deter her. I would recommend carrying crampons with you if you plan on hiking this trail until about May. Though the Ice was not prevalent on the trail there are a few North facing slopes under shade that appear to Ice up. With the crampons you will have nop problem. Without, would be a little risky. Wem also sw both Bear and Mopuntain Lion tracks in the Ice/Snow, as well as hoofprints possibly deer. |
