Trip Report: | 6/30/01: CANYON CITY TO SHEEP CAMP (5.2 miles) – Woke up around 8am but lounged in the tent until about 9am. The camp had pretty much emptied by the time I got up. The only people left this morning were the Canadian Navy from the HMS Whitehorse (who hiked in at 11pm last night.) Cooked up a very good Denver omelet this morning (thanks to The Camel’s non-stick pots) and sliced up some salami to add to the mix. The Navy occupied the outside picnic table, so we cooked in the cabin. By 11:20am, we were packed up and on the trail after the senator (the real one) loosened up and decided to snap some pictures of us. It was tough hiking along the canyon until we hit Pleasant Camp. Took a long food break in the area before pushing on to Sheep Camp which we made in less than an hour. The afternoon hiking was much easier. Pitched camp right on the river in an awesome spot #23 and #24. Had some vino, gorp, and lounged in the afternoon sun. Played a brief game of Euchre then checked out the Ranger talk about the gold rush. Cooked up some food after the evening NPS session, then had a few drinks with the Canadian Navy around 9pm. They were jonesing for The Camel’s smokes and offered up their booze in return. The Camel will pay for this tomorrow. |
