Trip Report: | 7/3/01: BARE LOON LAKE TO LAKE BENNETT, B.C. (4.0 miles) – The climate is much drier on this side of the pass, but we had rain overnight (so who knows). Hiked four miles today to Lake Bennett after a leisure morning at Bare Loon Lake. Cooked up some hot chocolate for breakfast amid a cloud of mosquitoes – the first major attack this trip. There’s been very few bugs for the most part, but I decided to done the headnet during breakfast. We were nearly the last group to hit the trail this morning for the hike to Lake Bennett. Yukon Matt blazed ahead and beat us there by at least 30 minutes. I think he’s making up for his assault on The Pass. Took a break with The Camel and The Senator at a hunting cabin below a huge rock outcrop that looked over Lake Lindeman. The last ½ mile to Lake Bennett was on sand and was similar to beach hiking. Got a few photos at the church and at the Chilkoot sign when we busted out of the woods. The Senator and I hit the lake (very briefly) upon arrival at the train station. The water was c-c-c-cold, so we were in and out within ten seconds. The train boarded for Skagway by 1pm. One of the guys from last night had some beers and food delivered and shared the booty. The skies cleared by mid-morning and we had perfect weather for the scenic ride out. Switched from the small caboose size train to a big multi-car train at the U.S./Canadian border in Fraiser, B.C. Once back in town, grabbed a deli sandwich then hit the motel room and the showers of the Westmark Inn. Got dinner at a nearby restaurant owned by the motel then hit the Red Onion Saloon for many beers (where we ran into most of the backpackers we hiked with on the trail.) Crashed after midnight after another trip to the deli for late night grub. |
