Trip Report: | This hike was the high point of our Memorial Day weekend trip to Zion National Park and both rims of Grand Canyon National Park. We had camped at the DeMotte Campground in the Kaibab National Forest just north of the national park the night before and we were alone there -- absolutely no other campers in the campground. Our first stop this quiet Sunday morning was Bright Angel Point where we watched the sunrise over the canyon. Even though Grand Canyon Lodge, a very extensive lodge and cabin complex is immediately adjacent to Bright Angel Point, there were very few people there when we were. Madeline actually sat on the edge of the canyon with her feet dangling over the rim -- brave girl. After the sunrise, we drove up to the trailhead. The morning was pleasant and sunny with temps in the upper 60s when John, Madeline, and I arrived at the trailhead. We met nobody else on the trail as we enjoyed a casual stroll through the lovely aspen forest. There was just enough breeze to make the aspen leaves make their singular music -- the sound of mountain streams. We stopped at every viewpoint to admire this magnificent canyon, a first visit for all of us. At the end of the trail, we walked out onto the rim and were immediately struck by the contrast between our pleasant forest walk and the heat of the desert rising up from the canyon. We ate our lunch in the shade of the trees, and used the outhouse that was there back then. Then we hiked back to the car. All three of us were so exhilirated by the beauty of the hike, as well as the ease of the hike, that we decided to celebrate by having an early supper at the Grand Canyon Lodge restaurant with its incomparable windows overlooking the canyon. The trout I ate that afternoon was especially sweet for the breathtaking views we enjoyed while eating. |
