Trip Report: Mike and I had hiked by Hirschberger many times on the way to somewhere else, but we thought we might actually explore the mountain itself. Since its just a short hike and close to home, we had a full breakfast before we left, and didn't actually get to the trailhead until 9:00. The weather was unusually warm for March, but we saddled up and headed out anyway. 100 yards into the trail we fond a pile of broken glass and trash from some hunters, judging by the empty shells left around. We took about a half an hour to clean it up and haul it back to the truck, then turned around and headed back up the trail, now running very late. We decided to shortcut the trail be brush busting for a few hundred yards around a nose. It turned out to be further than we thought, be we eventually ended up on the West face of the peak.
We walked down what we thought might have been a building site at one point, but we saw no evidence of construction materials. Around 1:00, we decided to stop and have lunch. After one cold beer (which I hauled in) and a quick smoke, we started back towards the car. Since it gets dark early in March, we stuck to the trail in case we had a problem. Nothing of note occured, and we found ourselves with enough time to check out the old mine. One entrance was completely blocked by falling rocks, but the other was open enough to just squeeze in. We poked around in the bottom level of the mine for an hour or so, and decided to head back to the truck. All went well, and we hit the road a little after 4:30. It was nice to finally see the peak itself, and the view was great!
