Trip Report: 6/30/95: (Toklat River – East Fork, 8 miles) – We packed up at the Sanctuary Campground this morning and caught the park bus at 10:30am to the Polychrome Pass rest area. Got off the bus, took some photos, and walked down the park road a short way and finally hit the trail by 1:30pm. We headed into the Wyoming Hills and immediately saw a caribou that was a short distance from the road. Took some photos, then continued up a drainage into the Wyoming Hills where Slawdog spotted two grizzly bears, a sow and cub, about 500 yards away. He passed us the binoculars for a better look, then we continued up the drainage to 4600 feet where Slawdog startled a group of dall sheep in a saddle in the Wyoming Hills. From there, we dropped back down into a canyon as the sheep scattered and we eventually made our way to the East Fork of the Toklat River around 9:30pm. We decided to cross the river at 3000’ where there was a flat area to set up camp for the night, but The Iceman had a difficult time during the ford and lost his AquaSocks and my hiking pole in the process. Slawdog and I decided to join forces after his experience and we had more success in the deep and fast moving water. Pitched camp and cooked dinner by midnight and we were all pretty wiped out by the end of the night.

Weather: Mostly overcast with some scattered sunshine. Temperatures to 50’s H, 40’s L
