Trip Report: | Day One: Took the ferry over to the island and hiked 3.2 miles to Stafford Campground using Parallel Trail and Pratts Trail. Weather was beautiful, sun was out and it wasn't to hot. The trails lead through maritime forests with large winding oak trees covered with spanish moss, and palms everywhere. After setting up camp at Stafford, I set off to explore the beaches which are a short walk from the site. Endless white sand on the beach, and the crashing of the waves made for a nice afternoon. In the evening I explored the immediate area and found an old small aircraft strip which was now used as grazing grounds for the ferel horses. Day Two: Overcast skys made for cooler temps. I left camp and took Stafford Beach Road to the Main Road north to explore Plum Orchard Mansion. The return trip from Plum Orchard Mansion I used Duck House Trail to the beach and hiked the beach back to Stafford. Total distance for the loop hike 9.6 miles. Evening showers made for an early night. Day Three: Overcast skys were abundant today which made great hiking weather. I left Stafford early to make th hike down to Dungeness Ruins. I used Pratts Trail, Parallel Trail, River Trail, and Dungeness Trail. The sites around the ruins were great, a lot of older structures and a glimpse into what it looked like back in the day. I finished out the loop hike with a 5.2 mile hike along the beach back to Stafford. I ended the day resting and relaxing on the beach. Total hike length to Dungeness and back 10.9 miles. Day Four: Packed up camp and took a leisurly stroll via the beach back to Sea Camp Dock to catch the 2:45pm ferry back to the mainland. |
