| Trip Report: | Matt was due at 3pm at the office, but showed up thirty minutes early and was sitting down at Starbucks when he called. This was a blessing, and allowed us to get out of Midtown early and beat the traffic. We were at the house by 3pm, then loaded the truck, switched vehicles, and hit the road for the A.T. Matt is starting his thru-hike tomorrow and we planned to camp at Springer Mountain tonight. Traffic was heavy but moving well as we closed in on Dawsonville this afternoon. Got some gas, then drove to Nimblewill Gap by 5:30pm. After a ceremonial beer at the trailhead, Matt dumped the change from his pockets and we began the graded climb to Springer. Passed two thru-hikers on the way who were worn out from the long climb from Amicalola. It took us about an hour to reach the summit. We snapped some photos, then pitched our tents in the meadow near the caretaker. All of the camping spots were full tonight and everyone convened on Springer for sunset. The sun was dropping below the horizon as we reached the bronze A.T. sign, but we made it in time to see the last of it and knock back a Foster's oilcan to kick off Matt's hike. Darkness came quickly, however, so we returned to the meadow and enjoyed some dinner and a firelog that the caretaker generously left for thru-hikers. (Thanks man!) I guess he was in town tonight, because we never saw him during our stay here. By 11:30pm, the fire had faded and the stars were out in force. We sacked out immediately as the temps were now in the low 50's and it was cooling off fast. |
