Hike Summary: | Arrived on Sunday, the 14th of May, and hiked the Rampart Ridge Loop trail, about 5 miles with around a 1,500 ft. elevation gain and loss. It was on this hike that we encountered the Gray Jay bird that stole Anne's muffin. Some of the trail was in snow, difficult hiking without snowshoes. See pictures. Spent Sunday night at the National Park Inn in Longmire in the park. Very overpriced but "in the park". Monday, the 15th, we hiked the Nisqually Vista Trail, 1.6 miles, then Skyline Trail, 5 miles, (both in snow), then a portion of the Wonderland trail to Carter falls, about 3 miles, where I finally got to eat lunch. After hiking we headed to Packwood, WA, and the Cowlitz River Lodge for the night. We ate lunch at an overlook where a bird snatched a muffin from Anne's hand as she was about to eat it. One of the pictures is of Anne feeding the bird. At that point it was still a cute bird. After the theft of the muffin it became a nuisance. A close up of the bird, a gray jay, is also shown. Other hikes that we did at Mt Rainier as well as others done on this trip are described on the website for this trip here: http://home.earthlink.net/~sneedhl/index.html |
