Hike Summary: | The trail (#047) starts on the opposite side of SR92 from the parking lot at the Pine Hollow Trailhead, and begins climbing immediately. Right after the first switchback, turn left onto trail #477 which drops down 400’ over slightly more than 0.5 mi to SR92 below. Cross the road and hike around the gates at Mutual Dell and up the road to the right. At the end of the road, you will see the trail sign for trail #179 to Timpooneke Campground. Follow this trail for 1 mile as it climbs up the steep slope. This trail is mostly in dense timber, but there are a couple of places where you will get a great view of Twin Peaks to the north. At the junction with trial #178, turn left and continue upward for 0.5 mi. You will cross a dirt road and climb a steep ridge on the opposite side and then the trail will join with trail #151 (Great Western Trail). At this point you will have reached the highest point on this trail at 7800’ (1500’ above Mutual Dell). Turn left onto trail #151 and follow it for about 0.25 mi as it drops down into a meadow until it joins trail #150 (also Great West Trail). Keep to the left and hike along trail #150 past the Timpooneke Trailhead for 2.5 mi going across a ridge (you only climb about 200’) and past Salamander Flat (a large campground) until it meets trail #047, the Pine Hollow Trail in a meadow. From this junction it is 1.5 mi back to the Pine Hollow Trailhead and downhill 1100’. |
