Hike Summary: | The trail to Navajo Knobs is about four and a half miles one way. This route follows the Hickman Bridge Trail then the Rim Overlook Trail to reach the rim of Capitol Reef. It gains about 1,600 feet en route to Navajo Knobs. There is an excellent panoramic view of the Waterpocket Fold and points east and south at the end of this trail. The trail begins at the Hickman Bridge Trailhead on Highway 24. It follows the river a short distance then switches back on itself, leading to a fork where the Rim Overlook Trail begins on the right. The left continues on to Hickman Bridge, a neat arch formation. Follow the right side of the trail, the Rim Overlook Trail, as it ascends to the rim of Capitol Reef. The Rim Overlook Trail goes for about two miles from Hickman Bridge Trail. It gains 1,080 feet en route to the rim overlook. Past the Rim Overlook the Navajo Knobs Trail continues to follow the ridge northeastward another two miles. This last portion of the trail ascends 500 feet and ends at the base of Navajo Knobs, elevation 6,980 feet after an overall elevation gain of 1,655 ft. You can climb up on the knobs for awesome 360 degree views of the Waterpocket Fold and the surrounding countryside. Return via the same route. When you get to the Hickman Bridge Trail junction, and if you aren't too tired, turn right and do a side hike to the bridge. It's worth the very short, maybe half a mile, extra walk. |
