Hike Summary: | This island is a jewel. We visited after our trip to Acadia NP. The island is at the entrance to the Bay of Fundy, the home of the highest tides in the world. Tides here are high but they are higher further up the bay. The hikes here are numerous. There is a group that has created well marked trails from the North side of the island all the way around the Western side to the Southern end of the island – then there are hikes on the eastern side at a provincial park called the Anchorage. We did a relatively short hike on the Western side from Dark Harbour North to Money Cove and back. Breathtaking scenery from several overlooks enroute, might even see a whale or two (though we did not). Supposed to be a lot around. This is just a wonderful little island where folks are friendly and helpful. Other hikes abound. We did another in the Hole in the Wall Campground, to the Hole in the Wall, a formation on the Northern coast that is a hole in the rock formation on the coast caused by the action of the water on the rocks. Also did another near the ferry landing to the Swallowtail Lighthouse, a beautiful lighthouse on the northeastern side of the island. Both of these are very short hikes and well worth the little effort required. You really will enjoy this place if you have occasion to visit. We did. |
