Hike Summary: | The hike can go either way north bound or south bound, depends on an individuals logistics. We chose to go south, driving to Harpers Ferry, leaving our car at the Harper Ferrys National Park, and shuttling to Pen Mar Park in Maryland. The distance covered is 41 miles and the trail is frequently called a rollercoaster because of the constant ups and downs. The greatest elevation change at one time may be approx 700' (est). Its a pleasant hike with a great array of trail conditions, heavy rocked, dirt, roots, and the typical north east trail with the moderate amount of rocks. There are a number of view points along the trail, High Rocks, Annapolis Rocks, White Rocks. It is also an historic hike and you go through the area of Antitem and the preceding battles. Its a shelter hike with no wild camping permitted. The shelters are adequately spaced for convenience. Annapolis Rocks has wooded campsites that are maintained and a caretaker is on site. Its also a section known for the 4 state challenge, Pa, Md, WV and Va in a 24 hour period. |
