Hike Summary: | The Berea College Department of Forestry currently manages 8,000 acres of forest land. It acquired its first tracts back in 1898, making it one of the oldest managed private forests in the United States. However, interestingly enough, Berea College did not offer a forestry degree program back then, nor does it now. The forest currently offers approximately nine miles of hiking trails to the public for year-round hiking. This particular hike begins at the parking lot and heads north-northeast along the Indian Fort Trail to both the Devil’s Kitchen and Indian Fort Lookout. The Devil’s Kitchen is a cave-like structure located beneath the trail and Indian Fort Lookout provides expansive views of both the valley below and adjacent landforms. |
